Unique was founded in 1998 in Freiburg, Germany, to develop and implement intelligent land use strategies at the intersection of forestry, agriculture, climate protection and rural development. Today, the company spans over 70 countries.

Viet Nam became a focus area given the country's extraordinary biodiversity, its vulnerability to climate change, and the urgency of coastal and forest restoration. Since initial consulting work in 2008, Unique's footprint in Viet Nam has steadily grown — from short-term advisory assignments to long-term project implementation, including own projects funded by the German International Climate Initiative (IKI).

In 2023, this long-term commitment led to the establishment of Unique Forestry and Agriculture Vietnam Co., Ltd., based in Huế. Establishing a permanent presence reflects a commitment that goes beyond externally funded projects: to contribute meaningfully to Viet Nam's sustainable development over the long term.

As a fully integrated part of the Unique group, the Vietnam office connects German and international technical expertise with deep local knowledge — scaling proven approaches, strengthening climate resilience, and building lasting partnerships across government, academia and international cooperation.

Who we are

Unique Vietnam — Our Team

A multidisciplinary team connecting international technical expertise with deep local knowledge and implementation capacity on the ground.

Max is the Managing Director of Unique Vietnam and Co-Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Division at unique land use GmbH. He is an expert in biodiversity, sustainable forest management, coastal protection and mangrove restoration. Based in Viet Nam since 2011, he manages Unique's regional operations and project portfolio in Southeast Asia. He holds a BSc in International Forest Ecosystem Management and an MA in Sustainable Development Cooperation.

Lieu leads the implementation of Unique Vietnam's project portfolio, overseeing delivery, quality and coordination across all active engagements — from Coastal Forest Restoration to Sustainable Forest Management. She is also responsible for operations and management of Unique's high-quality native tree species nursery. She holds a Master of Development Studies from London South Bank University.

Huy is a forestry specialist with expertise in forest carbon accounting, sustainable forest management and plantation silviculture. He supports Unique Vietnam's plantation forestry portfolio, including silvicultural planning, quality control and technical supervision of field operations. He holds a Master of Forestry Science from Viet Nam National University of Forestry and Göttingen University.

Katt brings expertise in project management, impact measurement and climate-related project development. Her work focuses on designing monitoring frameworks, stakeholder engagement and proposal development, bringing a private-sector lens to Unique's work. She holds an MS in Environmental Conservation from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a BS in Business from Hult International Business School.

Tien is a project officer with experience in sustainable forestry, nature-based solutions and stakeholder engagement. He works closely with local communities, overseeing field implementation including planting campaigns and community consultations. He holds a Master of Environmental Science from Okayama University, Japan, and a BSc in Soil Science Engineering from Hue University.

Hoa manages Unique Vietnam's day-to-day office operations, including financial administration, contracting and bilingual communication with partners and authorities. She contributes substantive expertise drawing on years of experience with LuxDev and FAO in Viet Nam. She holds a Master in Business Management.

Till is the Head of the Climate Department of unique land use GmbH and an internationally recognised expert in climate and biodiversity policy. Between 2006 and 2015 he was part of the German delegation to the UNFCCC and CBD negotiations. He provides strategic and technical guidance to the Vietnam office from Unique's headquarters in Freiburg.

EbA through Coastal Forest Restoration

With more than 3,200 km of coastline, Viet Nam is highly vulnerable to climate change. Together with IREN / HUSTA of Huế University we developed a unique ecosystem-based adaptation model — restoring degraded dune and mangrove forests with exclusively native species across Thua Thien Huế, Quảng Trị and Quảng Bình.
